Abstract

Ankle ligaments are vulnerable to injury and the ankle sprain is the most common presentation for lower limb injury to the accident and emergency departments worldwide. It is also a significant injury in the athletic population and is common in running cutting and carving activities in sport. Lateral ligament complex, syndesmotic ligaments, deltoid ligaments and lateral subtalar ligaments are the four different parts of the ligaments around the ankle. Anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) are the physical examinations of the ligaments around the ankle. Ankle ligament injuries are diagnosed primarily on a clinical basis. CT and MRI can help confirm the severity of the injury and the presence of concomitant injuries or illuminate a diagnosis where clinical examination and X-rays have failed. Conservative management is the treatment option for the ligaments around the ankle. Chronic ankle instability, syndesmotic ligament injuries, deltoid ligament injuries, acute subtalar ligament injury and chronic subtalar ligament injuries are the surgical management of the ligaments around the ankle.
