Abstract

This chapter discusses the diabetic foot. Foot infections affecting the skin, soft tissue or bone are one of the most common reasons for hospitalization of diabetics with figures ranging from 20% to 25% of all admissions. History of previous amputation, peripheral vascular disease, and peripheral neuropathy has also been identified as significant risk factors for a severe foot infection. The evaluation of a patient with a possible diabetic foot infection begins with the history. A complete diabetic history is essential and should include the duration of disease, previous complications or ulcerations, insulin dependence, and the assessment of recent glycemic control. Antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment. Surgical treatment and follow-up care are the treatment options for the diabetic foot. 10 well-colored figures are also provided in this chapter.
