Abstract

The main concern of this chapter presents the fractures of the talus, fractures of the calcaneus, open fractures of the foot, fracture of the base of the fifth metatarsal and fractures of the phalanges. Swelling and pain in the region of the talus, especially when a history of forced dorsiflexion can be elicited should alert the examiner to the possibility of a fracture of the talus. The most significant complication of fractures of the talus in children is AVN. The prognosis depends on the location of the fracture, fracture pattern and degree of displacement. Fractures of the calcaneus are very infrequent in children and usually, do not involve the subtalar joint. The usual mechanism of fracture of the calcaneus is a fall from a height or an explosion underneath the foot. Open fractures of the foot in children are caused by severe injuries, most often by the wheel of a motor vehicle running over the foot. Fracture of the proximal end of the fifth metatarsal is due to muscle pull of the peroneus brevis and is an avulsion type of injury. Fractures of the proximal phalanx have given rise to a greater incidence of osteomyelitis than might be expected. Fractures of the Tarsal bones and fractures of the metatarsals are also discussed in this chapter.
