Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to presents the fungal infections. Mycetoma is uncommon chronic infective disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue characterized by triad of tumefaction, draining sinuses and presence of colonial grains in the exudates. Mycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous infection due to actinomycetes or fungi which results in a granulomatous inflammatory response in the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue which can extend to the underlying bone. Mycetoma is caused by microaerophilic actinomycetes which is termed actinomycetoma and mycetoma caused by true fungi called eumycetoma. Candidiasis is a fungal infection due to type of Candida. Cryptococcosis is potentially fatal fungal disease which is caused by two species Cryptococcus neoformans and C. Gattii. Differential diagnosis and treatment is also discussed in this chapter.
