Abstract

Prosthetic is a branch of surgery covered with the replacement of missing part of the body and science which deals with prostheses. Postoperative prosthesis, initial prosthesis, preparatory prosthesis, definitive prosthesis, socket prosthesis, osseointegrated prosthesis, etc. are different uses of prosthetics. Exoskeletal and endoskeletal are two types of prostheses. Patient evaluation, impression procedure, positive model rectification, preparation of laminated socket, computer-aided designing and computer-aided manufacturing, test sockets, and static and dynamic alignment are the different levels of manufacturing of prosthesis. Interface components, terminal device, joints, joint mechanism and structures and cosmetic components are the different components of the prosthesis. Metals, plastics, wood, leather, fabric and rubber are the materials used in prosthetics and orthotics. Strength, stiffness, durability (fatigue resistance), density, corrosion resistance, ease of fabrication and cost and availability are the different important characteristics of prosthetic and orthotic materials. Function, comfort, cosmesis, fabrication and economics are the specifications for the ideal prosthesis/orthosis.
