Abstract

This chapter discusses the organism and its sensitivity. Formerly, 85% of the cases of skeletal tuberculosis under the age of 10 years were considered due to bovine bacilli. Most of the skeletal tuberculosis is now caused by bacilli of human type. The term nontypical mycobacteria refer to mycobacteria other than M. tuberculosis and M. Bovis. Rarely these organisms may be responsible for infective lesions in the skeletal system. Synovial sheath infections are more common with nontypical mycobacteria than infection of osseous tissues. Disease caused by nontypical mycobacteria and emergence of multidrug-resistant strains is an alarming and common observation seen in tuberculous disease in HIV patients.
