Abstract

This chapter discusses tuberculosis of the hip joint. Tuberculous disease of the hip is very common; the frequency of involvement is next only to spinal tuberculosis. Like osteoarticular tuberculosis in general, the most common age of start of illness is during first three decades. Pain, limping, deformity and fullness around the hip are the presenting symptoms when the disease is active. The limp is the earliest and the most common symptom. The disease of the hip joint passes through different stages as follows: tubercular synovitis, early arthritis, advanced arthritis, and advanced arthritis with subluxation or dislocation. Classification of the radiological appearance is also discussed in this chapter. The outcome of prognosis with modern antitubercular drugs depends essentially on the stage of the disease when the treatment is initiated.
