Abstract

This chapter discusses tuberculosis of spine: radiographic appearances and findings on modern imaging. Spinal tuberculosis is most difficult to recognize radiologically in its early stages. There are mainly four sites where tuberculosis occurs in the vertebral column, paradiscal type, central type (center of vertebral body), anterior type (involving anterior surface of the vertebral body), and appendiceal type. Paradiskal type of disease is the most common type of lesion and narrowing of the disk is often the earliest radiological finding. The central disease arises as a result of infection which starts from the center of vertebral body; the infection probably reaches the center through Batson’s venous plexus or through the branches of the posterior vertebral artery. Modern imaging techniques and classification of typical tubercular spondylitis are discussed in this chapter.
