Abstract

This chapter discusses injection neuritis. Injection neuritis or injection neuropathy is one of the devastating iatrogenic complications which can occur due to inadvertent instillation of an agent in and around a nerve. Intramuscular (IM) injection is a very common route of drug administration in the hospital as well as community setting and these iatrogenic tragedies still happen in spite of training and established protocols. The effects of injection neuritis are variable ranging from transient sensory disturbances to more permanent paralysis and numbness. Management of injection neuropathies can be divided into conservative and surgical means. Every nerve injury should be given the benefit of a good conservative therapy before embarking on surgical exploration. Conservative therapy includes pain control and analgesia, systemic steroids to decrease the inflammation as well as physiotherapy.
