Abstract

This chapter discusses common malignant bone tumor. Primary malignant bone tumors account for less than 0.2% of all malignancies. The most common types include osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma. While osteosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma generally occur in children and adolescents, chondrosarcoma is more frequently encountered in the adult and elderly population. Osteogenic sarcoma (osteosarcoma) is defined as a primary malignant tumor in which the malignant mesenchymal cells produce osteoid and/or immature bone. Ewing sarcoma is the third most common primary tumor of bone overall, but the second most common malignant bone tumor of late childhood and early adulthood accounting for approximately 1% of childhood cancers. Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor of cartilage producing cells. This chapter also discusses the clinical presentations, differential diagnosis, and treatment of common malignant bone tumors are also discussed in this chapter.
