Techniques of Liver Surgery

Liver is the largest solid organ in the body. It is unique because it receives its blood supply from two sources i.e. blood pumped from the left side of the heart and blood flow from all the organs of the gastrointestinal system. This book “Techniques of Liver Surgery” has been written to guide the aspiring surgeons through all the important aspects of liver surgery; its indications, technique, etc., and it carries instructions on how to operate for primary tumors in the liver as well as metastases. This book is divided into 12 chapters. First chapter deals with the indications for liver resection. The objective of the second chapter is to provide a brief discussion on techniques for transection of the liver. Diagnosis of the most common benign tumors of the liver such as hemangioma, hepatocellular adenoma, focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and hydatid cyst disease are covered in the third chapter. Operations for carcinoma of the gallbladder, carcinoma of the bile ducts, hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal liver metastases are described in fourth to seventh chapter. Eighth chapter discusses on procurement of the liver from a deceased donor. The first step of the liver transplant procedure in the patient is recipient hepatectomy. Step by step procedure of recipient hepatectomy is covered in ninth chapter. Tenth chapter presents a glimpse on different techniques which are used in liver transplantation. Donor hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has been described in eleventh chapter. Basic Prerequisites to Implantation and steps of implantation of the graft are briefly discussed in the last chapter of this book. This book contains the first detailed description of the “W technique”. A safe and reproducible technique for performing the hepatic artery anastomosis in living donor liver transplantation.
