Abstract

While most patients who access ORL services have conditions that can be managed completely within the medical sector, the majority of people with hearing loss require multifaceted treatment options to ensure that individual needs are met. This chapter discussed the many aspects of aural-rehabilitation, and attempts to provide the tools for ORL specialists to complete a basic needs assessment, allowing them to identify the potential rehabilitation avenues open for hearing impaired individuals. Aural rehabilitation has been defined as a “group of services designed to restore or optimize a patient’s participation in activities that have been limited as a result of a hearing loss”. Hearing loss configuration, site of lesion and environmental influences are the different factors that affect disability and described in this chapter. There are four different styles of hearing aid, the CIC (completely in the canal), ITE (in the ear) canal, the thin tube BTE (behind the ear) and the standard BTE. A detailed description on hearing aids, cochlear implants, assistive devices, counseling of hearing loss and auditory training have been also presented in this chapter.
