Abstract

This chapter aims to present a brief discussion on nasal discharge. The child who presents with a purulent nasal discharge is likely to have a form of infective rhinosinusitis (RS). Pediatric RS is defined as inflammation of the nose and the paranasal sinuses characterized by two or more symptoms, one of which should be either nasal obstruction or nasal discharge. RS can be divided into acute and chronic. It can also be classified according to the etiology and can be due to an infective or noninfective agent. Acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) is defined as an RS of < 30 days duration. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is defined as a nonsevere sinus infection with low-grade symptoms, present for > 12 weeks. A detailed description on ARS and CRS have been presented in this chapter.
