Abstract

This chapter covers techniques for assessing vestibular function available to the general otolaryngologist. Indications for referring patients for specialized vestibular function and balance testing will be discussed, but the techniques used and the interpretation thereof will not be covered in detail. The equipment described in this chapter should be available in a typical ORL clinic. In addition, an inexpensive digital camera with slow motion video capture capability can be very useful for the head impulse test (HIT); and either Frenzel glasses or infrared goggles are needed to perform the test for spontaneous nystagmus (SN).
