Abstract

This chapter gives an overview of diffusing capacity or transfer factor of the lung. Lung diffusion consists in the passing of O2 from the alveolar air to the blood of perialveolar capillaries and of CO2 in the opposite direction. This chapter covers the pathophysiology of pulmonary diffusion, alterations of lung diffusion capacity, advantages of using carbon monoxide, overview of lung diffusion measurement, patient preparation, acceptability and repeatability and interpretation of data. The main function of the respiratory system is to ensure, in cooperation with the cardiovascular system, the supply of oxygen (O2) to the tissues and the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from them. Diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) provides an objective measurement of lung function and measures the ability of the lungs to transfer gas from inhaled air to the red blood cells in pulmonary capillaries.
