Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to focus on the diagnostic applications of flexible bronchoscopy. Flexible bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows a clinician to explore the airways for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The instrument (flexible bronchoscope) uses a long, thin, lighted tube that is inserted through the nose, mouth or, less frequently, tracheostomy. The bronchoscope is a lightweight instrument, fully immersible for disinfecting and with bending angles that permit to reach most bronchial branches. Bronchoscopy is indicated for the diagnosis of various lung diseases in relation to the possibility of a simple inspection or to take samples in the lower airways. Particularly bronchoscopy is commonly used in the definition of pulmonary infiltrates of unknown nature. Bronchoscopic procedures performed under sedation are equally safe than those performed in the awake patient. This chapter also discusses the risks and complications and cleaning and reprocessing flexible bronchoscopes.
