The objective of this chapter is to introduce the pericarditis. Pericarditis refers to inflammation of the pericardium, two thin layers of a sac-like tissue that surround the heart, hold it in place and help it work. Pericarditis may be benign with full recovery within weeks in more than 80% of individuals. Pericardial effusions are present in approximately 60% of cases of acute pericarditis, with 80% being small and mild, 10% being moderate and 10% being severe. Pericarditis may be fibrinous, serofibrinous, hemorrhagic, or purulent. This chapter covers the patient assessment, consider causes of pericarditis, management, and myocarditis. Colchicine plus conventional therapy tested in an RCT caused clinically and statistically significant benefit over conventional treatment. The drug decreased the recurrence rate in patients with a first episode of acute pericarditis. In approximately 8% diarrhea caused discontinuation of the drug.
