Abstract

A cardiac arrest is when your heart suddenly stops pumping blood round your body, commonly because of a problem with electrical signals in your heart. When your heart stops pumping blood, your brain is starved of oxygen. This chapter covers the major causes of cardiac arrest, drug therapy for cardiac arrest, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation technique. Causes of cardiac arrest include ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (VT), asystole, and electromechanical dissociation (EMD). Drug use is of limited value. The salient points are listed. Epinephrine and other cardiac arrest drugs and their dosages are described in this chapter.
