Abstract

Long-term treatment with beta-blocker thiazide diuretics and statins has been noted to rarely increase blood glucose concentration in very few patients by approximately 0.2–1.0 mmol/L (~3–18 mg/dL). This increase is genuine in approximately 20% of patients treated for more than 2 years at high drug doses. But it is incorrect to label this as diabetes mellitus (DM). In individuals with prediabetes and family history of type 2 diabetes, beta-blockers, statins and diuretics might bring the diabetic state to light at an earlier point in time, thus allowing treatment to commence.
