Abstract

Emotion, in a subjective sense, refers to our feelings, positive and negative. Objectively, emotion can only be assessed based on an organism’s outward behavior as a result of the internal emotions. Emotional responses generally occur based on an organism’s current state and future needs. The emotional systems also impact many other bodily functions. Emotions can increase the heart rate and enhance cardiac function. This chapter covers the emotional perception, symptoms of emotional dysfunction, neurological basis of emotional disorders, testing for emotional dysfunction, and treatment of behavioral dysfunction. Treatment of a specific organic etiology is based on the nature of the underlying pathology. Symptomatic treatment may require psychotropic medications and psychiatric consultation.
