Abstract

The term agnosia refers to a condition in which there is normal perception of external stimuli, but one is unable to associate these stimuli with prior knowledge of its meaning or significance. Agnosia represents a lack or loss of knowledge. It is usually a modality specific recognition impairment that cannot be explained by simple problems in elementary sensory processing, global cognitive or attentional deficits, inability to name due to aphasia, or difficulty interpreting the testing stimuli used to assess recognition abilities. This chapter covers the visual agnosia-general, specific types of visual agnosia, color agnosia, simultanagnosia, topographagnosia, auditory agnosia, tactile agnosia, tests for agnosia, and treatment of agnosia.
