Abstract

Our general conscious perception includes our sense of awareness about ourselves and our external universe. When networks that mediate this perceptual awareness are damaged or dysfunctional, then the brain becomes “unaware” of the existence of objects in the affected internal or external space. Clinically, this is referred to as a “neglect syndrome”. Neglect is essentially a focal deficit of awareness confined to a spatial location (usually seen affecting the left side and left hemispace). Neglect syndromes can, therefore, be considered to have different components. These are the sensory-representational, motor-exploratory, and limbic-motivational components. This chapter covers the testing for neglect and treatment. To test for perceptual neglect, stimuli in different sensory modalities are presented to the right and left sides in a random order and the patient is asked to respond each time the stimulus is presented.
