Abstract

Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a noninvasive imaging technique that produces horizontal images of the skin in a cellular level resolution and in real time. This chapter covers the utility of confocal microscopy in the diagnosis of superficial spreading melanoma, the utility of confocal microscopy in the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma, and the utility of confocal microscopy in the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a relatively novel imaging tool that enables the identification of cells and tissues with nearly histologic resolution. Although several noninvasive tools have been explored to test their potential application in the clinical field, RCM has emerged as a unique instrument because it can visualize the skin tissue with a resolution that is comparable with conventional histopathology.
