Abstract

This chapter gives the description on liver in the question and answer format. The liver is the body’s largest gland. It is a vital organ that supports nearly every other organ in the body in some facet. This chapter covers the functions of liver, liver function tests, diagnostic procedures, liver biopsy, jaundice, congenital nonhemolytic hyperbilirubinemias, viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, acute liver failure, fatty liver, cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, drug and toxin induced hepatitis, hepatic venous outflow (HVOT) obstruction, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver transplantation, pyogenic abscess, metabolic liver disease, biliary cirrhosis, and alcoholic liver disease. Jaundice (icterus) is defined as yellowish pigmentation of skin, mucus membranes and sclera due to increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. The scleral involvement is because of it is rich elastic tissue that has special affinity for bilirubin. Viral hepatitis may be defined as an infection of hepatocytes that produces necrosis and inflammation of the liver.
