Abstract

This chapter gives an overview on management of labor. The management of labor divided into three stages, i.e. first stage of labor, second stage of labor and third stage of labor. The management of the first stage of labor includes diagnosis of labor and admission, fetal monitoring in the first stage of labor, progress in the first stage of labor, induction of labor, amniotomy and fetal scalp blood sampling, which are discussed in this chapter. The second stage of labor starts when the cervix becomes fully dilated and continues until delivery of the baby. Delaying the delivery far beyond 1 hour in the second stage should be allowed only after a senior midwife and/or obstetrician has carefully assessed the situation. The third stage of labor is that of placental separation, which begins after the baby is born andends with the delivery of the placenta and fetal membranes.
