Abstract

This chapter provides detail discussion on normal labor. Dorsal position can be helpful for the midwife, particularly with regard to the ease of maintaining continuous fetal monitoring with the cardiotocograph (CTG) and in the second stage enabling him/her to support the perineum adequately when the head crowns. It also facilitates the performance of an episiotomy when necessary. In this position, to aid expulsive efforts, the parturient is sometimes instructed to pull on her thighs—a practice that helps her to concentrate on the perineum. Conduct of the second stage, conduct of the third stage and shoulder dystocia are also covered in this chapter. 19 well-colored and well-labeled figures are also presented in this chapter.
