Abstract

This chapter discusses acute on chronic liver failure and clinical scores. Acute hepatic insult manifesting as jaundice and coagulopathy complicated within 4 weeks by ascites and/ or encephalopathy in a patient with previously diagnosed or undiagnosed chronic liver disease. Acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) is different from decompensated cirrhosis. The most important difference between both the entities is the potentially reversible nature of ACLF, by controlling the precipitating factor. Stages of cirrhosis, liver biopsy of ACLF, clinical scores used in liver diseases, and liver biopsy sign out are also covered in this chapter.
