Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the chronic hepatitis. Chronic hepatitis is defined as symptomatic, serological or biochemical evidence of a relapsing or continuing illness for more than 6 months with histopathological documentation of inflammation and hepatocyte necrosis/loss with fibrosis. This chapter covers the etiology of chronic hepatitis, clinical features of chronic hepatitis, laboratory investigation, indications of liver biopsy in chronic hepatitis, histological sine qua non, liver biopsy, special stains useful in chronic hepatitis, etiology specific histopathological changes, approach to non-neoplastic liver diseases, nomenclature and scoring, and liver biopsy sign out.
