Abstract

This chapter presents a glimpse on traction alopecia. It is a traumatic hair loss due to severe pulling of scalp hair. The pulling of hairs usually results from hairstyling practices. Scarring alopecia most commonly affects the marginal scalp when it is termed marginal traction alopecia. Uncommonly tractional alopecia may affect other areas of the scalp. Trichoscopy is useful in distinguishing traction alopecia from other causes of alopecias. It shows hair casts around the hair shafts at the margin of the patches where it is seen as cylindrical casts that envelop the proximal portion of the hair shaft. Seven clinical images are also provided in this chapter, which are helpful for readers in understanding traction alopecia clearly.
