Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to cover telogen effluvium (TE). It is defined as sudden generalized shedding of telogen hairs few months after an acute systemic stressful episode. It may be triggered by internal or external factors which cause a large number of hairs to enter the telogen phase at a time. Telogen hairs start shedding after 3–4 months of exposure to triggering factors. These factors include various physical and psychological trauma, medications such as beta blockers, retinoids, etc., and ultraviolet exposure. Diagnostic aids for acute and chronic TE are histopathology and trichogram along with a history and examination to identify the cause of TE. Six clinical images are also presented in this chapter, which are very helpful for readers.
