Abstract

In this chapter, tinea capitis has been discussed with the help of clinical images. Tinea capitis is a fungal infection affecting the hair and scalp and is most commonly seen in pediatric age group. In children, it is most commonly caused by microsporum and trichophyton species. Trichophyton causes endothrix tinea capitis. Fungal hyphae and arthroconidia in endothrix occupy the hair shaft from within and the whole hair shaft may be weakened. Diagnosis is based on direct microscopic exam of infected hair and mycological cultures. Scalp scaling and patchy alopecia are the frequent clinical presentations. Key trichoscopic features of tinea capitis are also mentioned in this chapter. Morse code hairs are a specific trichoscopic feature of fungal infection of scalp and eyebrow. Horizontal bands correspond to localized areas of fungal infection, which result in hair perforation.
