Abstract

The object of this chapter is to cover a broad description on body hairs with the help of clinical images. Circle hair represents a body hair growth disorder and is characterized by asymptomatic presence of circular or spiral hairs. Rolled hairs present as keratotic inflammatory follicular papules with twisted hairs. Association has been reported with treatment with cyclosporin and corticosteroid, keratosis pilaris, xerosis, ichthyosis, etc. Ingrown hair usually occurs over beard area, nape of neck, axillae, legs, and pubic area. Papulopustular lesions are the main presentation of ingrown hairs in men located commonly in the beard and submental areas. In case of trichostasis spinulosa open comedo-like lesions or horny spinous plugs are seen primarily on the tip of the nose, alae nasi, and cheeks. Dermoscopy provides fast and easy diagnosis. On dermoscopy there are tufts of multiple vellus hairs emerging from the dilated follicles. Keratosis pilaris is a common autosomal dominant disorder characterized by keratinous plugs in the follicular infundibulum with varying degrees of perifollicular erythema. Pili multigemini is a developmental defect of hair follicles where multiple hair shafts emerge from a single follicle. Eruptive vellus hair cysts (EVHC) present as multiple, asymptomatic papules over chest and abdomen with a smooth or centrally umbilicated surface. Demodicosis results from infestation with the Demodex mite, an obligate human parasite having two species, Demodex folliculorum, and Demodex brevis.
