Abstract

This chapter focuses on trichoscopic monitoring and follow-up. Besides diagnosis, trichoscopy helps in following up of diseases like alopecia areata, trichotillomania, androgenetic alopecia, tinea capitis, and other scarring and nonscarring alopecias. Monitoring the diseases may be complex but can be simplified by taking some easy parameters. In alopecia areata inactivity or improvement of the disease process can be assessed by disappearance or reduction of exclamation mark hairs, black dots etc., and presence of regrowing hairs. In a similar manner trichotillomania, telogen effluvium, tinea capitis and pediculosis also can be monitored trichoscopically. So trichoscopy is a highly effective investigative tool not only for the diagnosis of the disease but also for the monitoring and sequential follow-up of the treatment efficacy.
