The skin, or integument, is much more than a simple wrapping around our bodies. It is an active and versatile organ which is waterproof so that we do not dry up in the heat or melt in the rain, and it protects us from the damaging radiation of sunlight. This chapter covers the review of structure and function of the skin, nursing care of child with skin infection, herpes simplex virus infection, burns, and insect bites and stings. The skin is an organ of the integumentary system made up of multiple layers of ectodermal tissue, and guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organs. The knowledge of structure and functions of skin is necessary to understand the changes that occur with different disorders. Burns and scalds are a high injury risk for children. A burn is a type of injury to flesh or skin caused by heat, electricity, chemicals, or radiation. A child’s sensitive skin burns far more easily than adult skin.
