Abstract

Antidiabetics agents are used to control elevated blood glucose levels. Insulin is used for type I and oral hypoglycemic agents are used for type II DM. During pregnancy insulin is a recommended drug for controlling glucose level. Drugs control but does not cure DM and therapy is usually lifelong. Antidiabetics include alpha glycoside inhibitors, biguanides, meglitinides, sulfonylureas, and thiazolidinediones. Alpha glycoside inhibitors include acarbose and miglitol. Meglitinides includes nateglinide and repaglinide. Sulfonylureas include chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, gliclazide, glimepiride, glipizide, and tolbutamide. Uses, dosages, and side effects of all these drugs are also covered in this chapter.
