Abstract

An antidiarrheal drug is any medication which provides symptomatic relief for diarrhea. Antidiarrheals include diphenoxylate or atropine, loperamide, and racecadotril. Diphenoxylate and loperamide act by slowing intestinal mobility and propulsion. Racecadotril only decreases hypersecretion. Uses, dosages, and side effects of all these drugs are also covered in this chapter. Common side effects are constipation, nausea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, drowsiness. Serious side effects include paralytic ileus and toxic megacolon.
