Antitussives act by suppressing the cough reflex and should only be used for dry unproductive cough or if cough is tiring, disturbing sleep or is hazardous (cardiac diseases, piles, ocular surgery, hernia). Expectorants act by liquefying and reducing viscosity of thick tenacious secretions, facilitating its removal by cough. Antitussives include acetylcysteine, ambroxol, ammonium chloride, bromhexine, carbocisteine, codeine, dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, and guaifensin. Action, uses, dosages and side effects of all these drugs are also covered in this chapter.
