Skeletal muscle relaxants centrally acting agent acts at spinal level by inhibiting reflexes. Direct acting agents act on skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscle relaxants include baclofen, carisoprodol, chlorzoxazone, methacarbamol, and tizanidine. Baclofen and tizanidine are used for treatment of spasticity associated with CP, reversible spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord lesions. Other agents are used for muscle spasm and pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions. Dantrolene is used for spasticity associated with spinal cord lesions, stroke, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. Common side effects are dizziness, fatigue, weakness, nausea, anorexia, and hypotension. Serious side effects are GI bleeding and anaphylaxis.
