Critical care is the specialized care of patients whose conditions are life-threatening and who require comprehensive care and constant monitoring, usually in intensive care units (ICUs). The main objective of critical care is to maintain organ system functioning and improve the patient’s condition such that his or her underlying injury or illness can then be treated with the help of advanced therapeutic, monitoring and diagnostic technology. This book “Critical Care Update 2017” describes best practices in critical care in a concise and clinically-oriented manner. This book is divided into 10 sections and comprises of total 79 chapters. Individual sections deliver expert guidance on managing critical care aspects in pulmonary, neurological, hematologic, gastrointestinal, pediatric disorders and infectious diseases. Each chapter provides quick access to practical guidance on the problem encountered in the ICU. The book provides streamlined content supplemented by tables, images and algorithms which are written by expert who are well known for their academic inclination and clinical expertise. This update will highlight the recent advances made in the field of critical care with special reference to its relevance and application in resource limited settings. A special section on “Economics of ICU” is worth mentioning. This book will be useful for young intensivists to promote analytical thinking, post graduates to keep abreast of recent advances, and also to senior clinicians.
