The occupational therapist (OT) plays an important role in multidisciplinary care with emphasis on patient education and training in functional activities. There are various techniques used by OT to optimize the function of patients suffering pain. There are a variety of manual therapy techniques and adaptive equipment that can be beneficial in the treatment of pain. This chapter covers the assessment, orthotics and equipment, manual therapy and massage, strengthening, stretching, and modalities. OT commonly use stretching and strengthening exercises in managing pain issues. All muscles, ligaments, tendons are mobile structures and limitations in motion of these structures can exacerbate pain. Stretching exercises prescribed by OT target specific areas and teach patients safe and effective exercises that decrease pain and discomfort.
