Vocational rehabilitation is indicated in individuals with physical disabilities to help engage in gainful employment. Vocational rehabilitation has been described as a four-phase sequence of events following as evaluation, planning, treatment, and finally termination or placement. There are various approaches to vocational rehabilitation, including the traditional approach and the nontraditional approach. Nontraditional vocational rehabilitation programs include sheltered workshops, day programs, home-based programs, and employment programs. Traditional and nontraditional vocational rehabilitation both begin with the placement of a referral to a vocational rehabilitation counselor/expert by the person with the disability, a physician, or a social worker/case manager.
