The objective of this chapter is to introduce psychological evaluation. A psychological evaluation can pinpoint both psychological and social dysfunction impacting pain. Most importantly, the use of psychological testing with pain patients can provide a medical provider insight into the patient’s pain experience and help to identify viable treatment avenues. When referring a patient for a psychological evaluation, it is important to find a clinician who is experienced working with pain patients. The clinician should be familiar with recent pain literature and pain psychometrics. The clinician should also have the appropriate training and knowledge to conduct a functional analysis of the patient’s pain. A thorough functional analysis provides a synthesis of problems and variables that are associated with them. This information is useful to help develop an effective treatment plan to address chronic pain. Many pain providers utilize numerical or visual rating scales to allow patients to rate the degree of pain they are experiencing.
