Abstract

Hypertension is defined as a consistent elevation in systolic BP more than 140 mm Hg or a consistent elevation in diastolic BP more than 90 mm Hg. Hypertension (HTN) is the term used to describe high BP. It is considered with peripheral vascular disease, because it involves problems of peripheral circulation. Hypertension is a common public health problem with devastating consequences. It often remains asymptomatic until late stage. Blood pressure is a measurement of the force by blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood in each contraction. Blood pressure above 140/90 mm Hg is considered as abnormal. Risk factors for HTN are classified under modifiable risk factors and non-modifiable risk factors. Incidence of pressure, pathophysiology of pressure, clinical manifestation of pressure, classification of blood pressure, and complication of HTN are also discussed in this chapter.
