Abstract

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a basic emergency medical procedure done for a patient who is under cardiac arrest. CPR is the process of artificially supporting a patient whose respiration and pulse have ceased. CPR can be performed in any setting, in hospital, in community or anywhere. All healthcare providers should be well-trained regarding the steps of basic life support (BLS). The three main goals of CPR are to establish an airway, initiate breathing, and maintain circulation. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can be performed in various conditions like heart failure, near drowning, ventricular fibrillation, respiratory arrest and medication overdose. General procedure, cessation of CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, complication of CPR, and definitive therapy are covered in this chapter.
