Abstract

Clinical teaching is an individualized or group teaching to the nursing students in the clinical area by the nurse educators, staff nurse and clinical nurse manager. The case study method of teaching and learning originated many centuries ago when Hippocrates used it as a method of teaching medicine. Case study as a method of teaching probably has been used in the teaching of nursing more extensively and for a longer time than any other method. There are three distinct methods commonly used in teaching with cases. These are case analysis method, case incident method, and case study method. The case analysis method of teaching focuses on a central situation, which requires some decision or solution. It presents a concrete case for analysis and discussion by a group of students under the leadership of the instructor. Case incident method of teaching is a modification of case analysis method. It focuses on a critical or crucial incident in a case or situation, which requires immediate decision and action.
