Abstract

This chapter presents a glimpse on infective endocarditis (IE) prevention. The risk for IE is higher with bacteria such as Streptococcus viridans, staphylococci and enterococci on which specific mediators of bacterial adherence are present. The risk of antibiotic-associated adverse events exceeds the benefit, if any, from IE prophylaxis. Vancomycin is a reasonable initial choice for empiric therapy for treating a possible methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infection. Prophylactic regimen for IE before a dental procedure is also tabulated in this chapter which is self-explanatory.
