Abstract

The chapter gives an insight into the disorders of pigmentation. Depending on the histopathological level of melanin in the skin, clinical color of the skin varies. There are two types of melanin; brown-black eumelanin and red-brown or yellow pheomelanin. It discusses about the epidermal melanocytic lesions that are melasma, lentigine, Becker’s nevus, Café-au-lait macule, etc. and also about the dermal or dermal–epidermal junction melanocytic lesions. The chapter also covers topics like nevus of Ota, nevus of Ito, and systemic causes of hyperpigmentation. Disorders of hypopigmentation or depigmentation are classified into congenital and acquired. Acquired lesions comprise depigmented lesions (vitiligo), and hypopigmented lesions.
