Abstract

This chapter deals with the disorders of hair and nail in a simplified, point-wise manner. There are different types of hair, depending upon the diameter and whether follicles have androgen receptors. Three stages of hair on scalp are anagen hairs, catagen, and telogen. There are two types of hair loss (alopecia), namely non-cicatricial (non-scarring) alopecia, and cicatricial (scarring) alopecia. The hair effects of androgens are mediated through androgen receptor which is present on androgen dependent hairs (frontal and vertex areas in males) and absent on androgen independent hairs (lateral and posterior scalp areas). Testosterone is the major circulating androgen. Non-cicatricial alopecia comprises alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, non-patterned hair loss, and trichotillomania. Scarring or cicatricial alopecia includes lichen planopilaris, linear scalp morphoea, chronic folliculitis and tinea capitis. Various diseases of nail are also featured in the chapter, including pitting, trachyonychia, Beau’s line, Muehrcke’s nails, half and half nail, and Terry’s nails.
