Abstract

The chapter discusses about the fungal infections. Stains used for fungi are PAS (Periodic acid Schiff) which stains only living fungi and GMS (Gomori-Grocott’s methanamine silver) which stains living and also dead fungi. Superficial mycoses are the infections that rests in the epidermis which are pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor), piedra, candidiasis (moniliasis, thrush), and dermatophytosis (ring worm, tinea). Subcutaneous mycoses are the infections that rests in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue and include sporotrichosis, mycetoma, and chromoblastomycosis. There are boxes in the chapter with the name of “high-yield point” and “aid to remember” that will help the students to remember important points and have a quick glance on the key points.
