Abstract

This chapter talks about rheumatology. This chapter is divided into four sections that cover the systemic lupus erythematosus, Kawasaki disease, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and vasculitis. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem autoimmune disease typically characterized by a chronic relapsing disease course. Pediatric onset SLE has relatively more severe disease course with more frequent major organ involvement as compared to adult onset disease. Children with lupus require more aggressive immunosuppression and carry a higher risk of mortality as compared to adult patients. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute self-limiting vasculitis of childhood predominantly affecting medium-size vessels with a predilection to involve the coronary arteries (in around 15–25% of untreated patients) and remains the major cause of mortality. Arthritis is defined as presence of joint swelling or effusion, or two or more of the following-tenderness or pain on movement, warmth and limitation of range of movements.
